Trellis: William Morris' very first wallpaper

In 1862 Morris drew his first wallpaper design, and he didn't have to leave his garden to do it. Trellis is the rose trellis at Red House, the house in Bexleyheath that his friend Philip Webb had designed for him: wooden laths, climbing roses growing straight through them, a few flies and beetles. Morris didn't draw the birds himself: they are Webb's.

It was his first design but only the third to be printed, and it was not an instant success. In the 1860s people wanted wallpaper that looked spatial and lifelike; the flat, almost naive Trellis did not fit in. More than 160 years later, Morris & Co. still sells it: taste came round to the design later.

On the sock we kept the cream ground of the paper, with the trellis, the red roses and Webb's blue birds on top. Knitted in, not printed: the colours are part of the sock itself, so they don't fade.
